2026 Rent Affordability: Don’t Move Until You Check This
Team MyKamra

Ignoring these 6 numbers is why people move in smiling and move out broke. Tick them before you pay token.
1. Post-Tax Salary
CTC ₹35 k ≠ take-home ₹29 k. Use March payslip, not offer letter. Rent cap = 30 % of THAT.
2. Existing EMIs
Phone + education loan = ₹4 k → rent cap drops from ₹10 k to ₹8 k. Do the subtraction first.
3. Commute Cost
Save ₹3 k rent but spend ₹2 k cab daily = lose. Use MyKamra Commute Cost to add fuel + metro + surge.
4. Annual Hike Cycle
If company hikes only July, lock 12-month lease before April – you’ll pay old rent for full year.
5. Deposit Source
No savings → deposit loan EMI eats rent cap. Factor EMI in 50 % rule.
6. Fun Tax
Beer cost: Mumbai ₹220 vs Indore ₹120. Same salary, different party budget. Adjust rent accordingly.
Feed all 6 into MyKamra Affordability Checker – we flag “don’t move” if any red line crosses.
