10 Things to Check Before Renting a Room – Most People Forget
Team MyKamra

Renting a room looks easy – until the Wi-Fi dies on Day 1 and the seller turns into Gabbar Singh. Save yourself the drama. Keep this 4-minute checklist handy before you pay token money.
1. Night Visit
Colonies that look like Yash Raj sets at noon can feel like Gangs of Wasseypur after 11 p.m. Go back at night – check lights, noise, and how safe the lane feels when your cab drops you.
2. Water + Geyser Test
Don't just ask "gyser hai?" – turn it on. Flush once. Open every tap. Low pressure on a Monday morning is worse than your boss's mood.
3. Network & Wi-Fi
Run a speed-test on your own phone. If Jio gives 0.3 Mbps, your work-from-home life is over. Peek at the router too – if it's collecting cobwebs, bargain for a new one.
4. Who Lives Next Door?
Knock and say hi. If five guys are blasting Animal songs on loop, you'll know. Girls, check if other working women are around – safety in numbers.
5. Meter Reading Pic
Click a photo of the electricity & water meters the day you visit. Share it on WhatsApp with the owner so no one can inflate numbers later.
6. Visitor Rules
Many PGs slip in "no opposite-gender visitors" after you shift. Ask now – parents, friends, partner stay-over – get a clear yes/no.
7. Kitchen Reality
"Cooking allowed" can mean one induction plate for ten people. Open the fridge – if it smells like a bio lab, order Swiggy forever.
8. Deposit Deductions
Ask what they cut for painting, cleaning, "wear & tear". Normal nail holes are NOT ₹2 000 damage. Use our Move-in Cost Calculator and know exact cash you need on day one.
9. Notice Period
One month or two? Can you find a replacement and leave early? Sort this before you pay; afterwards the seller turns into Sooryavanshi – 56-inch notice period only.
10. Exit Photos
Shoot a quick 1-min video of existing cracks, stains, broken handles while checking. WhatsApp it to the broker same day – free insurance against fake damage claims.
Spend 20 minutes now, save 20 headaches later. Share this with your flat-hunt group and thank us when your new room actually feels like home. Happy hunting!
